Flight of the Jeweller 💎🚨 The sudden closure of Torres Jewellery, a chain with six stores in Mumbai, has left over ₹1.25 lakh investors in distress. Operating under Platinum Haren Private Ltd, the company abruptly shut down on December 30, 2024, after luring investors with promises of high returns, including 48% annually on gold, 96% on silver, and 520% on moissanite purchases. The company used incentives like weekly payouts, extravagant rewards (cars and phones), and referrals to create a pyramid-like structure, drawing in more investors. During the festive season, the company increased pay-out margins, attracting more unsuspecting participants. However, the scam came to light when the stores in Dadar and Sanpada were suddenly shut down without notice, and payments stopped. Hundreds of investors protested, demanding the return of their principal investments, and some filed complaints with Shivaji Park police station. In response, police filed separate FIRs against the protesters for damaging property. Victims demand a return on their principal investments, but Torres Jewellery has blamed the CEO and some staff members. Police have named the company’s directors, CEO, general manager, and store manager suspects in the case. The arrested directors, Tania Casatova and Sarvesh Surve, along with senior executive Valentine Kumar, have been remanded in police custody until January 13. Torres Jewellery used various tactics to appear legitimate, such as displaying fake jewellery and initially paying out returns to build trust. Moissanite investments, promising weekly returns of 8-11%, became a popular choice among investors. However, the scheme collapsed in December, and many victims, some of whom had encouraged family and friends to invest, are now in despair. Authorities estimate the magnitude of the scam has reached 18.5 crores and may rise to more than 100 crores. Reports suggest the company’s owners could have fled the country. Investigations are ongoing to uncover the full scope of the fraud. This situation has rightly highlighted the cautiousness required by the people while investing their money. India’s jewellery exports dip 13 percent in June to Rs 15,9340 crore India's overall gems and jewellery exports witnessed a 13 percent decline in June 2024 at Rs 15,940 crore ($1,909.57 million) as against Rs 18,414 crore in June 2023, said Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). The decline in exports was attributed to muted demand from overseas markets including key markets like China among others. The overall exports of cut and polished diamonds was Rs 8,496 crore while gold jewellery exports stood at Rs 5,074 crore. Commenting on the decline in exports, Colin Shah, chairman of GJEPC in a statement said, “This decline in gems and jewellery exports is owing to the prolonged geopolitical tensions leading to economic uncertainty in the global markets, which has pushed the demand southwards in the overseas markets.” “The uptick in exports of gold jewellery was following the robust demand in the global market as prices are currently less volatile, which has encouraged consumers to make the most out of this situation and purchase the yellow metal as an investment avenue as well as for wearable purpose,” Shah added. With exports declining, GJEPC had recently made suggestions to the government to promote the industry worldwide to mitigate this global downturn.
